5 Things Every Parent Should Know Before Choosing a Dance Studio

If most dance studios seem to have qualified, friendly teachers, experience teaching children and a big show at the end of the year, aren’t they all pretty much the same? Does it really matter which place you decide to enroll at? Absolutely! Here are a few important factors that can make a huge difference in the quality of instruction your child will receive. Considering these five basic guidelines when choosing a dance studio will help you achieve the overall satisfaction and enjoyment found within a dance program.

#1. What is the facility like, and where is it located?
Dance is a very physical activity, which requires the appropriate amount of space and a specific type of floor. The floor surface should be appropriate for all dance styles taught in that room. For example, hardwood floors are appropriate for tap dance as well as other forms, a marley floor is appropriate for dance floors requiring a controlled slip surface, and floated floors are appropriate for longer rehearsal times, so the students are provided with cushion and shock absorption. Offering two locations, one in Nashville and one in Mt. Juliet, School of Dance provides convenience for families in the community.

#2. What are the class choices, and what kind of teachers will be instructing my child?
Our classes vary in age from 18 months to adult and range in level from beginner to professional to ensure that there is a class to meet everyone’s needs. Our school has morning and afternoon classes as well as evening and weekend offerings for those with daytime commitments. Whether you or your child is interested in dance for a recreational activity or a professional career, our studio will provide you with the best education for either choice. With over 15 staff members, our students are able to have the best teachers suited for their specific class. Our staff includes certified instructors through various associations and masters of dance. With 39 years of business under our belt, all staff members are required to have extensive experience in teaching, training, and performing. In addition to teaching credentials, all staff members are trained in child and adult CPR. Safety is a top priority at our dance studios. Parents are able to rest assured that their children are being taught by qualified professionals.

#3. Now about the end of the year show, what is the time commitment and where is it held?
Dance studios put on a year end show in a variety of venues. Rehearsals and shows can be very unorganized and time consuming which results in frustration for parents who are very busy, and for students who perform better in an organized setting. There is generally an admission charge or a ticket to get into the show. Our studio holds our show in a professional theatre. This allows the students the best atmosphere for a performance with a professional stage and staff. We begin and end on time, and parents do not have to pay extra for costume alteration. The school provides each student with two complementary tickets, a free DVD, and professional, organized, and fun performances for all students.

#4. Is there a well designed curriculum in place?
Dance is a very technical form of art. A well-designed curriculum should both challenge and inspire the beginner to the most seasoned dancer. This balance between a challenging yet inspiring program must contain proper technique, sequence and terminology at all levels. The mixture of fun, creativity, energy and the proper music are also big factors when determining if a program has been designed from optimal learning and enjoyment. Our class schedule offers a broad range of popular and traditional dance forms for all ages (18 months& up) and all levels. Our school has a specific curriculum designed to create and capture a student’s enthusiasm while emphasizing proper technique, sequence and terminology. We also provide the opportunity for our dancers to excel beyond recreational level. Our company program is a vehicle through which a dancer can participate in performances and competitions throughout the year. Our teacher assistant program provides an opportunity for a student to become a certified dance instructor which allows them future income earning opportunities and growth as young adults.

#5. Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?
Our school focuses on customer service and convenience in addition to providing top quality instruction. At many dance studios there is no one available to assist parents and students while classes are in session or when questions arise away from the school. Our school provides front desk support during class time and a receptionist to answer phone inquiries from 9am-6pm, Monday- Friday and 9am-2pm Saturday. This way, teachers are able to focus all of their attention on the students and not on administration or paperwork details.
